Located in southwest Baca County on the Everett Ranch. We offer lodging in our historic post-office turned guesthouse, interpretive tours on the Comanche National Grasslands and surrounding areas, bird watching opportunities as a part of the Colorado Birding Trail, and turkey hunting on the ranch. Our ranch is adjacent to the Comanche National Grasslands and the Sikes Ranch State Wildlife Area (Map).

Edible, Useful, Medicinal, and Dangerous Wild Plants of Southeastern Colorado
A half day field session focusing on identifying, harvesting and processing wild plants
The wild plants found in the canyons and prairies of SE Colorado have supported indigenous peoples for hundreds of years. Today, modern people yearn to know more about the lives and practices of these ancient people.
Although the semi-arid pinon/juniper ecosystem may appear barren and devoid of useful plants, it is actually quite rich in plant resources.
This hands on field session includes the following:
- A bibliography of field guides focusing on wild useful plants
- A equipment list of the tools and equipment needed to ID and gather plants-
- Handouts discussing the Dos and Don’ts of ethical foraging
- An overview of Leave No Trace techniques and ethics
Backcountry safety techniques will be taught and utilized
Additional Information:
-This class involves and requires, the ability to hike short distances (one to two miles) over moderate terrain- Clothing/Equipment: Attendees should bring: a day pack, sun protection, plenty of water, trail snacks, writing materials, sturdy footwear (hiking boots), and proper clothing for expected weather

– No pets or children under age 12

Bob Kennemer – Bob is the owner of the Spanish Peaks Outdoor Center (SPOC), an educational nonprofit focused on environment and outdoor education. Bob majored in environmental and outdoor education at the University of Denver. He went on to attend the National Outdoor Leadership School in Lander, Wyoming, where he was certified as an outdoor leader. Bob’s specialty is guided nature hikes focusing on useful wild plants, mushrooms, wildlife safety, and local history. He has worked as a professional outdoor guide and instructor since 1978.
