Day 14- 8/29/18, 11.7 miles plus 1 mi road walk
1700ft Elevation
Twin Lakes mi 177.4 to Avalance Meadow Stream mi 189.4
Beginning the West Collegiates
We started in Twin Lakes, around 1pm. We had not wanted to start too early since we weren’t going that far. Plus, Aron caught us since we waited! So we waited while he resupplied at the store before hiking out. We all hiked together around the perimeter of the lake to the south side. It was warm and sunny, so Aron let us both try his umbrella. I did like it, but not having to hold it. I would need to rig up a way to carry it hands free.
We took the Collegiate West Alternate and headed to Interlaken then up the mountain towards Hope Pass. We got to see the historic Interlaken Resort today as we hiked past. It was fun to see it again. Still just as beautiful as it was four years ago. Such a cool house! And the hexagonal outhouse cracks me up- but hey! They had leather toilet seats! Of Course I made everybody go in and look around.
The trail was pretty flat today until the last three miles that went straight up about 1700 feet. We are at 10,900+ and camped by a little meadow. Only 1.9 to the pass at 12,548. So nice to break up the climb. Tomorrow we may do Lake Ann Pass as well. We’ll see, would love to get past that one tomorrow, but the crew may veto! Makes the elevation super high at over 4,000 feet but we are relatively fresh! Michaela’s knee held up today, tomorrow will tell the tale. Tons of up and down.
Most thankful for …. totally unrelated to the trail!! My dad got on a horse today for the first time since his aneurysm!!!! Thank you Lord! Thank you Jim Mapes! Thank you Casey, Stormie, Justin, and of course my mom!!! For all being there for this awesome day!! Makes me smile even when climbing thousands of feet with a heavy pack.
I saw God today….. when I saw videos and Picts of my dad riding!! This is a miracle people- not luck, not just how it is but the real live hand of God moving among us!!
Verse of the day…’For all good things come from above, from the father of the heavenly lights who dies not change like the shifting shadows.’ – James
What I ate for supper… Mac and Cheese!!! Hot drink and snickers. Yum!
Quote of the day….”switchbacks must cost money b/c we didn’t have many today” – Seaside (Aron) the trail was pretty steeply straight up!
What I learned today…that I love it when I get to camp and I have cell service to call my hubby!
Most favorite part of the day… probably getting to the meadow and listening to a few praise songs in the fading sunshine while a squirrel threw pine cones at me- like 50 of them.
Least favorite part of the day… dreading the climb, but the whole hike today was pretty scenic around the lake and along the shores.
Most useful gear of the day… probably my backpack today’s since there was a lot of food to pack out today and I was still pretty comfortable! So that’s super nice
The worst food of the day…an Epic Salmon bar. Maple smoked salmon. Probably not something you’re gonna want to try, but I got it out of the hiker box for free so…
Song of the day…and all the people said amen!
