The big day!!
Labor Day traffic in fairplay. There was a mile long line to get gas at one place so we went to the next and got some pizza there for lunch. We got to the trailhead at about 2:20 or so outside of Breckenridge. We loaded Bunny slowly so that she wouldn’t get too nervous and then set off up the trail at 3:07. Mom waved us off and then headed back over Hoisier Pass and home with the trailer. We got about .2 mi up the trail and Chelly got too close behind her and spoked her for our first wreck of the hike. She bucked and kicked and almost kicked Chelly but instead ripped one whole side pocket off his doggy pack. So I got Chelly out if the way and then helped dad hold bunny as re saddled and loaded her again. Then we headed on. We climbed steadily and eventually came to a creek- which Bunny thought she might drown in if she got too close too. No persuading would get her across. Luckily there was a wooden bridge there and after a little bit she crossed that hesitantly. But we had three more creek crossings after that and she did have to get her feet wet. She nearly cram dad over crossing the second and third time. But when we got to camp around 7:30 dad took her down and she played in the creek and splashed around getting a drink and decided the water was ok. Dad had not eaten enough that afternoon though and the hike had been uphill and we had had to push to get to where we wanted to be. We were making camp in the dark and cold at 10,500. So I helped dad get some food eaten and some hot chocolate down and he felt slightly better. I also sewed Chelly’s dog pack back together with dental floss so he could carry his own food as I had had to carry half his good along with my five days worth. I am sure I packed too much food! It is SO heavy! I went light on everything but that I guess so my pack is about 30lbs fully loaded. I decided to sleep in his tent to make sure he did ok the rest of the night. We were asleep by 9:45. Whew!
Had cell service so called. Casey
