Soap Creek, West Elk Wilderness

We camped at ponderosa camp ground last night and we got there at 8:30 or so and it was cloudy and raining. So we pitched camp in the back of the Nissan with us and Chelly. It was tight and not really long enough, but we slept some. We got up this morning and did our final packing and then headed up the Soap Creek Road. The road was muddy and potholed from he rains. We made it about 6 mi? And hit a big hill that we decided not to try on the mud. We also found out our 4WD low doesn’t work! So we packed up and started walking. We hiked for about 2.5 hrs and got to Big Soap Park 4 mi? Not sure. Some great camp sites up here and it is spectacularly gorgeous! So green, so many shades of green and purple and blue. Then we hiked on up the soap creek road towards the trailhead. About 1.5 mi or so we came to a good place to fix at about 3 and fished for the next hour and caught 5 Brookies. I made a small fire and broke in the fry bake pan frying the fish. So we are and we’re done and hiking again about 6:30. We hiked until we found the Soap Creek Trail – at last! Yeah! Then hiked a little further. At 7:30 we did our bear hangs and set up camp. We are now waiting for it to get dark! We could hike a little longer if we wanted. On a side note the solid solar charger set up I brought works, so I charged my phone a little today. We’ll see if it keeps working 😉
