Day 8- 8/23/18, 6.5mi, 2000ft elevation
Breckenridge 104.4- Seasonal Stream at mi 111ish
Most thankful for… delicious breakfast, nice helpful postal employees, getting my resupply done, getting out of town.
I saw God today…..Super helpful bus drivers getting around Breckenridge, and the postal worker actually told me what I needed to do in order to mail my pack with food in it. So I bought a role of tape, buckled all the buckles around it and then taped it all down. Ten I added mailing labels and shipped that sucker to Salida so I can use some of that food in the future! Only $18.95 to ship it in state and that includes the roll of tape and the mailing label!
What I ate for supper…lasagna with an added cheese stick melted in. It was pretty good. My first time trying that freeze dried meal. Oh and snickers and peach tea! I got gifted some amazing cheese and another square of chocolate…which I think helped keep me up later that night.
Quote of the day….”So, last night I saw this bear outlined outside my tent and heard him sniffing around it.” –MarioPolo from his experience the night before east of Breckenridge.
Fun Story…We met a new hiker yesterday a polish man from New York City! He has hiked some of the Appalachian Trail. He is hiking the first 12 segments of the trail and was trying to keep up with this guy who started when he did. Anyway, as we are setting up camp he tells us that the night before along the North Fork of the Swan River, he was camped and about 4:40/5:00 in the morning he hears snuffling and heavy footsteps then sees the outline of a bear pass along side of his tent. He grabbed his whistle but wasn’t sure whether to blow it or stay quiet. The bear wandered off. Frozen in fear mostly. Not sure what I would have done either. I guess stayed quiet until it tried getting in?.
What I learned today… that I was excited to get back on the trail! Ready to go hike the next section to Twin Lakes. And yes, 5 days of food is still heavy! But I got rid of as much weight as I could!!! My pack is better.
Most favorite part of the day…eating supper and talking with Rouge, Aaron, MarioPolo in camp.
Least favorite part of the day…getting in bed and trying to sleep- I was SO COLD!!
Camped at…11,110 feet
Most useful gear of the day… camp stove so I could eat a hot meal and hot drink!
