Cloverdale Mine – Westcliffe/Hillside, CO

Cloverdale Mine

The mine is located below Silver Lake on Lake Creek Rd (Rd 198) west of Hillside, CO at 11,440ft. The mine was created in 1922. The mine is located on the National Forest but mined by the Oakwood Mining Company starting in 1951 through about 1960.

Minerals

The mine is considered to be small significance, and not of world class importance. However, the primary mineral mined is Gold with Lead and Silver as secondary.  The mine is considered to be viable for gold and could be profitable. Silver can be mined here as well, but probably not of economic significance. There are no known plans to re-open the mine.

Getting There

The 4WD road to the mine is fairly long and rough.  The mine sits at the top of a beautiful valley with a truly unique set of buildings that are mostly still standing.  It gives a glimpse into a past that we often only read about.  The mine camp is a site worth visiting.

From Hillside take Rd 198 west.  After the first 4 miles or so the road becomes significantly rougher and requires skilled driving to reach the mine.  High clearance vehicles and 4WD would be required.
